A background confusion about the Book One in "Farewell to Arms" by Ernest Hemingway?

At the end of book one, Henry was sent to Milan for his wound. What i dont get is, isnt Italy an enemy of England and American? Right? Italy was allied with Germany and Austria- Hungary? Why is he sent to America? Or am i wrong? Italy is not allied with Germany? SO CONFUSING? HELP PLEASE
