Conservatives and liberals?

What is the history behind these names in political labels in America? Conservatives don't seem to like conserving as much as liberals do. Most conservatives don't really care about the environment and conserving it. Liberals don't seem to want liberty as their name might suggest. It seems like liberals want more government regulations and less freedom. The more liberal one gets, the more power the government has and the less freedom people have.
