Is it a coincidence that some earthquakes in the past were close as far as the date?

Back in 1994, The Northridge, California earthquake struck. Then a year later, on the same date, Kobe, Japan was struck by a big quake. Is it coincidence, or perhaps does one quake cause underground pressure, which may cause another quake?
